Retaining the natural dentition involves controlling the biofilm, debridement of calculus, identifying risk factors, and motivating patients to take responsibility for their oral health. In the context of the new periodontal disease classification system, this course will present documentation of management of chronic and acute clinical cases. These cases will illustrate how periodontal therapy and appropriate case selection can be utilized to arrest attachment loss and in certain cases, restore the periodontium. The value and limitations of adjunctive therapy will be reviewed. Helping patients understand that their prognosis will improve when they are compliant with treatment, re-care, and effective home care will also
be discussed.
